Examining Gender Identity in Spatial Ability: Influences on Mental Rotation Tasks, Spatial Anxiety Scales, and Spatial Memory Tasks
Much of the research on spatial cognition focuses on sex differences found among certain tests of spatial ability. However, little to none of the research considers the role of gender identity in spatial abilities. Gender identity, the internal identification and expression of gender, differs from sex as sex is assigned at birth and can differ from how an individual later identifies. As little research exists on the measurement of individual high in masculine or feminine traits but who do not hit the threshold for gender incongruence with their sex, this study aims to address how varying levels of masculinity and femininity in individuals may influence performance on spatial ability tasks. Mental rotation tasks, spatial anxiety scales and object-location memory tasks were selected for the spatial ability tasks and the GERAS was used to assess levels of masculinity and femininity. Given that the deficit of women in STEM fields may be attributable to reduced spatial abilities and heightened spatial anxiety, this study addresses this deficit through identifying if masculine-identifying women score higher on spatial ability tasks and lower on spatial anxiety scales. Data collection will cease on February 26, 2021 so interpretation of data will be completed after this date.

Gender Identity
As we go into 2021 people are becoming much more open minded to other people and other people’s opinions. One topic that is being discussed more and more is gender identity or how people view their gender. In the past people have not been as open and understanding to people’s preference and identity. Even to this day people aren’t as understanding as they could be. What I hear is, “I don’t understand it but I support you”. People should understand gender identity, or at least take the time to understand why it is so important to understand it. How you view yourself mentally, emotionally and physically affect your relationships and your social experiences. People going through a difference in what they see versus what they feel can affect someone psychologically to the point that they take their own life because of it. Understanding the nuances of gender identity can help bring people together and bring everyone to a common ground. Having a better understanding of what transgender, and people questioning, can help society come together instead of having to hide in a group to be able to feel comfortable.

The Truth About Fairy Tales

The Truth About Fairy Tales
Fairy Tales can bring wonder to the minds of young children all around the world. They can teach lessons and morals, promote personal growth, and be entertaining for children. But could these stories actually be damaging to children’s future self-esteem and value? When children watch/read a fairy tale, are they learning that the most important thing in life is their aesthetic appeal? Researchers have found that many fairy tales today showcase beautiful people and reinforce traditional gender stereotypes that can be confusing for all kids, especially for young girls. While some researchers argue children are often left with conflicting thoughts and miss the message of the story completely, other researchers say that fairy tales are important for a child’s development and a valid part of learning. They further argue Fairy Tales are a good way for children to cope with hard lessons like the difference between good and evil, an internal struggle many people have. More researchers and psychologists have gone on to praise certain fairytales for teaching children to conquer fears. My research explores both sides of this debate and ultimately equips educators and parents with tools to ensure young people are positively influenced and encouraged by fairy tales.
